Case diameter is what people usually check first, but it’s not the whole story. Lug-to-lug, the distance from the top of the watch case to the bottom at the lugs, determines how far the watch actually extends across your wrist. For example, a Nomos Club Campus with a 38.5mm diameter but an almost 50mm lug-to-lug can overhang a smaller wrist and look larger than the case size suggests.
As a rough guide, you want the lug-to-lug measurement to sit at or under your wrist’s flat width, with little or no overhang. Overhang means the case extends past the edge of your wrist, which will tend to look and feel oversized, even on a watch with a smaller case diameter
Measure it in 30 seconds! Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist, just above the wrist bone where a watch normally sits. No tape measure? Use a strip of paper or string instead, mark where it overlaps, then measure that length with a ruler.
