The Tag Heuer 1000 Series – Orange Dial 980.014L

Since I’ve been on a roll posting Heuers lately, I figured I might as well present the next piece in what has unintentionally become a mini Tag Heuer collection. You’re likely familiar with the Tag Heuer 1000 professional series diver. Despite its quartz movement and obvious style cues from the Submariner, it’s secured its place among the most loved vintage dive watches, and with Tag’s recent resurgence the 1000 series has seen an uptick in recognition (and price) with enthusiasts looking for undervalued pieces with a pedigree.

Sourcing the Tag Heuer 1000

My intro to the world of 1000s began with the watch Leo DiCaprio wore in The Wolf of Wall Street (my fascination with movie worn watches is well documented), but I quickly discovered the hefty premium that a true gold 1000 carried, and that most you’d find for sale were frankenwatches with modified plating or mismatched parts cosplaying as “Wolfies,” as the model is colloquially named.

The desire came and went, until the bug was reignited shortly after I picked up my 2000 Moondust. Discovering these quartz Heuers felt like finding a relatively affordable way to get that new watch dopamine fix while still getting a solid vintage piece with real heritage. I started looking into the more commonly available black dial 980.013s, but at the time already had a few black dive watches, my Seiko SKX013 and Tudor 75190, and wanted something a little out of the ordinary. So my eyes shifted toward some of the more unique variants of the 1000, namely the full lume 980.113 and orange dial 980.014 variants. After some back and forth I landed on the orange dial, and the hunt was on.

The Case

After some searching, I came across a 980.014L in great shape from a trusted Tag dealer overseas. Earlier on in my Heuer fandom, I wasn’t aware of the different variations of the 1000 case, I only knew Tag dial and Heuer-only dial. As far as I’m aware, while the full lume 980.113 model was available with both Heuer and Tag Heuer branding, the orange dial 1000 variants only ever released with Heuer-only branding before the merger with Tag.

After exchanging some emails with the man, myth and legend at tag1000diver.com, I learned that my specific watch was the less common L case variant with orange dial, known as the “economy” model by some. It features acrylic glass and a thinner case, measuring 11mm vs the thicker Monnin case at 13mm. At the time this was something I preferred, because in my mind then, thinner = always better. Obviously! However, my feelings on wearability and wrist presence were subject to change. Dimensions aside there are also some subtle design changes to the case itself compared to thicker counterparts, notably the crownguards which are far less robust and angular on the thin cases.

Wearability

I gotta be honest. After the honeymoon period, I just didn’t wear it. Was it cool? Objectively, it was. Was it rare? Sort of. Did I feel it calling to me when I opened my watch box? Never. It maybe saw 5 days of wrist time over 2 years. I tried different straps, NATOs, I went as far as to track down a period correct Heuer jubilee bracelet, but stopped myself before pulling the trigger for $250 on what the seller assured me was not a very solid feeling bracelet. (Seriously, he talked me out of buying it.)

The problem was, the watch felt almost… dainty? Something about the dimensions paired with the color and the fact that it was quartz just made it feel toy-like. I found myself kicking myself for not trying to source one of the earlier Monnin case variants. At the time I thought I was making the right call, as I typically prefer a slimmer watch, but something about this watch just made me want it to feel heavier, thicker, tougher.

The Verdict

In an attempt to curate my collection, I’ve sold off some pieces in the past year, and this orange 980.014L didn’t make the cut. But just when I got rid of it, two more 1000s made their way in, this time thick case Monnin variants. Stay tuned for articles on these soon!
